RESUMO Objetivo Verificar e comparar os efeitos imediatos da técnica de oscilação oral de alta frequência sonorizada (OOAFS) e sopro sonorizado com tubo de ressonância na autopercepção de sintomas vocais/laríngeos e na qualidade vocal de idosas. Método Participaram 14 mulheres idosas que realizaram as técnicas OOAFS e sopro sonorizado com tubo de ressonância de silicone, com wash-out de uma semana. Todas responderam questões sobre frequência e intensidade dos sintomas vocais/laríngeos; foram submetidas à gravação da vogal sustentada /a/ e contagem de números, para análise perceptivo-auditiva e acústica vocal. Foram extraídos os tempos máximos de fonação (TMF). Em seguida, sorteou-se a técnica a ser realizada: OOAFS ou tubo de ressonância, por três minutos em tom habitual. Após exercício, os mesmos procedimentos da avaliação inicial foram repetidos e as idosas responderam a um questionário de autoavaliação sobre os efeitos das técnicas. Os dados foram comparados antes e após aplicação das técnicas por meio dos testes ANOVA, Wilcoxon e Mann-Whitney; para as sensações vocais após técnicas, aplicou-se teste Quiquadrado(p<0,05). Resultados Ao comparar as técnicas, verificou-se diminuição da rugosidade e melhora da ressonância na contagem dos números após tubo de ressonância e manutenção dos resultados após OOAFS. Não houve mais diferenças significantes para as demais variáveis estudadas entre os grupos. Conclusão O sopro sonorizado com tubo de ressonância melhora a qualidade vocal de mulheres idosas. Além disso, ambos os exercícios apresentaram semelhanças na autopercepção dos sintomas vocais/laríngeos e sensações, sugerindo que a OOAFS é segura e pode ser empregada na terapia de voz nesta população.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify and compare the immediate effects of the voiced oral high-frequency oscillation (VOHFO) technique and the phonation into a silicone resonance tube in the elderly self-perception of vocal and laryngeal symptoms and in their voice quality. Methods 14 elderly women, over 60 years old, performed the VOHFO and phonation into a resonance tube technique (35cm in length and 9mm in diameter) with one-week interval between both to avoid carry-over effect. Initially, all participants answered questions regarding the frequency and intensity of their vocal/laryngeal symptoms. Recordings of the sustained vowel /a/ and counting numbers were performed for posterior perceptual and acoustic analyses of the voice quality. The maximum phonation time (MPT) for /a/, /s/, /z/ and counting numbers were also obtained. After that, a draw lot established which technique (VOHFO or resonance tube) would be initially applied for three minutes. After the exercise performance the same procedures were carried out and the elderly women answered a self-assessment questionnaire about the effect of the techniques in her voice, larynx, breathing and articulation. Comparison pre and post each technique were analyzed using ANOVA, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. The sensations after the techniques were assessed using the Chi-square test (p<0.05). Results The comparison of both techniques showed decrease in roughness and improvement in resonance for counting numbers after the resonance tube and same outcomes post VOHFO. There were no significant differences for the other analyzed variables between groups. Conclusion The phonation into a resonance tube exercise improves the vocal quality of elderly women. In addition, both exercises are similar regarding self-perception of vocal / laryngeal symptoms and sensations post three minutes of the technique, suggesting that VOHFO can be safely applied in voice therapy for this population.

Abstract The pursuit for quality of life urged a better understanding of aspects involved in ageing to minimize its consequences. Although many studies investigated older adults’ voice, aspects affecting this population voice-related quality of life have not yet been explored. Objective To investigate how aerodynamics and vocal aspects are associated with voice-related quality of life in older adults. Methodology fifty-six older adults aged 60 years or above – 39 women and 17 men – were evaluated. The following procedures were performed: application of the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) protocol; vocal assessment, including auditory-perceptual and acoustic analysis, from which we obtained fundamental frequency (F 0 ), standard deviation of fundamental frequency (SDF 0 ), shimmer, amplitude perturbation quotient (APQ), jitter, pitch period perturbation quotient (PPQ), and harmonics to noise ratio (HNR); aerodynamic assessment using a spirometer; and maximum phonation time (MPT) for /a/, /s/, /z/ and number counting. Results older adults tend to present high V-RQOL scores. Among women, roughness, APQ, and HNR parameters were negatively correlated with V-RQOL, whereas F 0 was positively. We found no correlation between spirometry measurements and V-RQOL. MPT for /a/, /z/, and number counting was positively correlated with V-RQOL solely among men. Conclusion Vocal roughness and acoustic parameters have a negative impact on the quality of life of older women. Respiratory aspects related to the available air support for speaking affected the most the voice-related quality of life of older men.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar e comparar os efeitos da terapia manual laríngea (TML) e da estimulação elétrica nervosa transcutânea (TENS) na diadococinesia laríngea de mulheres disfônicas. Método Participaram 20 mulheres com nódulos vocais, divididas igualmente por sorteio em: Grupo TML–aplicação de TML; Grupo TENS–aplicação de TENS; ambos receberam 12 sessões de tratamento, duas vezes por semana, 20 minutos cada, pelo mesmo terapeuta. As mulheres foram avaliadas quanto à diadococinesia (DDC) laríngea em três momentos, diagnóstico, pré-tratamento e pós-tratamento, o que produziu três grupos de medidas. A gravação da DDC foi realizada por meio da repetição entrecortada das vogais: /a/ e /i/. A análise da DDC foi realizada pelo programa Motor Speech Profile Advanced (MSP)-KayPentax. Os parâmetros da DDC das três avaliações foram comparados entre si pelo teste t pareado (p≤0,05). Resultados Parâmetros DDC se apresentaram semelhantes na fase sem tratamento, indicando que não houve variabilidade individual ao longo do tempo. Não houve modificação em relação à velocidade da DDC após intervenções, mas após TML, a DDC da vogal /i/ se apresentou mais estável em relação à duração do período e à intensidade das emissões. Estes resultados indicam que TML melhorou a coordenação de movimentos das pregas vocais à fonação. Não houve modificações dos parâmetros da DDC em relação à estabilidade das emissões após TENS. Conclusão TML promove maior regularidade de movimentos diadococinéticos das pregas vocais em mulheres disfônicas, o que amplia o conhecimento sobre o efeito do reequilíbrio da musculatura laríngea na função fonatória, já TENS não proporciona efeitos na diadococinesia laríngea.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify and compare the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and laryngeal manual therapy (LMT) on laryngeal diadochokinesis (DDK) of dysphonic women. Methods Twenty women with bilateral vocal nodules participated and were equally divided into: LMT Group – LMT application; TENS Group – TENS application; both groups received 12 sessions of treatment, twice a week, with a duration of 20 minutes each, applied by the same therapist. The women were evaluated as to laryngeal DDK at three moments: diagnostic, pre-treatment, and post-treatment, which produced three groups of measurements. The DDK recording was performed with intersected repetition of vowels /a/ and / i/. The analysis of vowels was performed by the program Motor Speech Profile Advanced (MSP)-KayPentax. The DDK parameters of the three evaluations were compared by means of the paired t-test (p≤0.05). Results The measurements of laryngeal DDK parameters were similar in the phase without treatment, indicating no individual variability over time. There was no change with respect to the speed of DDK after intervention, but after LMT, DDK of the vowel /i/ was more stable in terms of the duration of the emissions and intensity of emissions repeated. These results show improved coordination of vocal folds movement during phonation. There were no changes in the DDK parameters following TENS. Conclusion LMT provides greater regularity of movement during laryngeal diadochokinesis in dysphonic women, which extends knowledge on the effect of rebalancing the larynx muscles during phonation, although TENS does not impact laryngeal diadochokinesis.

RESUMO Objetivo correlacionar os sintomas de desconforto do trato vocal e desvantagem de voz percebida em homens e mulheres cantores evangélicos. Método participaram 100 cantores evangélicos, 50 do gênero masculino e 50 do feminino. Todos os participantes responderam a dois questionários: Escala de Desconforto do trato vocal (EDTV) e o Índice de Desvantagem para o Canto Moderno (IDCM). Foi realizada a comparação entre os gêneros, tanto em relação aos sintomas do trato vocal como em relação aos índices de IDCM, por meio do teste Mann-Whitney. Para a correlação entre as respostas na Escala de Desconforto no Trato Vocal e IDCM, foi utilizado o teste de Correlação de Sperman (p<0,05). Resultados cantoras evangélicas apresentaram maior frequência e intensidade de sintomas de desconforto do trato vocal, bem como maior desvantagem vocal para o canto, quando comparadas aos cantores evangélicos. Considerando as respostas de todos os cantores, houve correlações positivas entre os sintomas de desconforto do trato vocal e a desvantagem vocal para o canto. Conclusão as percepções de desconforto em trato vocal e de desvantagem para o canto foram diferentes entre os cantores evangélicos do gênero masculino e feminino no grupo estudado. O maior desconforto no trato vocal e desvantagem no canto foram verificados pelas cantoras. Quanto maior foi a frequência e a intensidade de sintomas de desconforto no trato vocal, maior foi a desvantagem vocal.

ABSTRACT Objective To verify the correlation between vocal tract discomfort symptoms and perceived voice handicaps in gospel singers, analyzing possible differences according to gender. Methods 100 gospel singers volunteered, 50 male and 50 female. All participants answered two questionnaires: Vocal Tract Discomfort (VTD) scale and the Modern Singing Handicap Index (MSHI) that investigates the vocal handicap perceived by singers, linking the results of both instruments (p<0.05). Results Women presented more perceived handicaps and also more frequent and higher intensity vocal tract discomfort. Furthermore, the more frequent and intense the vocal tract symptoms, the higher the vocal handicap for singing. Conclusion Female gospel singers present higher frequency and intensity of vocal tract discomfort symptoms, as well as higher voice handicap for singing than male gospel singers. The higher the frequency and intensity of the laryngeal symptoms, the higher the vocal handicap will be.

RESUMO Objetivos: Verificar o efeito imediato da terapia manual laríngea (TML) na dor musculoesquelética, na voz e nas sensações autorreferidas em indivíduos com disfonia funcional/organofuncional de origem comportamental e em indivíduos sem disfonia. Métodos: Participaram 30 indivíduos do gênero feminino e masculino, com idade entre 18 e 45 anos. Foram divididos em grupo disfônico (GD), 15 indivíduos com disfonia funcional/organofuncional; e grupo controle (GC), 15 indivíduos com vozes saudáveis, sem queixas vocais. Todos preencheram questionário de investigação de dor e foram submetidos a registro vocal para posterior avaliação perceptivo-auditiva e acústica da voz. Aplicou-se a TML por 20 minutos em ambos os grupos e repetiu-se a avaliação inicial. Após a TML, os indivíduos realizaram autoavaliação referente às sensações vocais, laríngeas, articulatórias e respiratórias. Resultados: No GD observou-se diminuição da dor após aplicação da TML nas regiões: temporal, laringe, parte posterior do pescoço, punhos/mãos/dedos, parte superior e inferior das costas, quadril/coxas, não observado no GC. A análise perceptivo-auditiva da vogal /a/ revelou que não houve diferença significante em nenhum parâmetro de ambos os grupos após TML. Na fala espontânea, houve piora no parâmetro rugosidade após a TML apenas no GD. Os indivíduos do GD relataram melhor sensação na laringe e articulação após a TML, o mesmo não foi observado no GC. Conclusão: A TML diminuiu a intensidade da dor corporal em disfônicos, o que não ocorreu com os indivíduos sem alterações vocais. Apesar da análise perceptivo-auditiva revelar aumento da rugosidade vocal, foram relatadas sensações positivas na laringe e na articulação pelos disfônicos após a TML.

ABSTRACT Purposes: To investigate the immediate effect of Laryngeal Manual Therapy (LMT) in musculoskeletal pain, in voice and sensations referred to individuals with behavioral dysphonia and individuals without it. Methods: 30 individuals ranging from 18 to 45 years old were selected and sorted into two groups: the dysphonic group (DG) - 15 individuals with functional or organofunctional dysphonia, and the control group (CG) - 15 individuals without vocal complaints and with non-impaired voices. The individuals answered a pain questionnaire and their voices were subsequently registered. The initial evaluation was repeated after the LMT. The LMT was applied for 20 minutes. After the LMT, the individuals were self-evaluated in terms of sensations in their voices, larynxes, articulations and respiration. Results: After the application of LMT, the DG reported significant improvement of pain in the following areas: temporal, larynx, posterior neck, wrists/hands/fingers, upper and lower back, hip/thigh, which did not occur in CG. The perceptual analysis of the vowel /a/ revealed no significant difference in any parameter in both groups after the LMT. The analysis of the speech showed that there was an increase of the roughness parameter after the application of LMT just in the DG. The DG individuals reported better sensations in the larynx and articulations after the submission to LMT, which did not occur in CG. Conclusion: this study clarified that TML immediately reduces the intensity of corporal pain in dysphonic individuals, which did not occur in individuals without any vocal impairments. Although the perceptual analysis reveals an increase of the roughness in the quality of the voice, positive sensation in the larynx and articulation were reported by dysphonic individuals after the application of TML.

Objetivo:Investigar a localização, frequência e intensidade da dor muscular em mulheres com disfonia funcional/organofuncional e comparar com um grupo de mulheres com vozes saudáveis.Métodos:Participaram 60 mulheres, entre 18 e 45 anos, divididas em dois grupos: Disfônico (GD) – 30 mulheres com disfonia funcional/organofuncional; Não Disfônico (GND) – 30 mulheres sem queixas vocais, sem alterações vocais. Todas responderam a um protocolo para localização, frequência e intensidade da dor. Foram investigadas as regiões: temporal, masseteres, submandibular, laringe/faringe, parte anterior/posterior do pescoço, ombros, parte superior/inferior das costas, cotovelos, punhos/mãos/dedos, quadril/coxas, joelhos, tornozelos/pés. A voluntária deveria assinalar a frequência em que a dor esteve presente nos últimos 12 meses: não, raramente, com frequência ou sempre. Para mensuração da intensidade da dor, utilizou-se a escala visual analógica. Os grupos foram comparados pelo teste de Mann-Whitney (p<0,05).Resultados:As mulheres do GD relataram maior frequência de dores na região submandibular (p=0,008), região da laringe/faringe (p<0,001), parte anterior (p=0,015) e posterior (p=0,001) do pescoço, ombros (p=0,027) e parte superior das costas (p=0,027) do que as do GND; relataram dor significativamente mais intensa na laringe/faringe (p=0,022) e região posterior do pescoço (p=0,003) quando comparadas ao GND.Conclusão:A frequência e intensidade de dor musculoesquelética foram maiores e mais frequentes nas mulheres disfônicas do que nas sem queixas, revelando que a dor pode estar relacionada às disfonias funcionais e organofuncionais em mulheres.

Objective:To investigate the location, frequency and intensity of muscle pain in dysphonic functional/organofunctional women in comparison to women with healthy voices.Methods:Sixty women, ranging in age from 18 to 45 years, divided into two groups: Dysphonic Group (DG) – 30 women with functional or organofunctional dysphonia; Non-Dysphonic Group (NDG) – 30 women without vocal complaints, and with adapted voices. All answered a protocol, marking the localization, frequency and intensity symptoms of pain on the temporal area, masseters, submandibular areas, larynx/pharynx, front and back of the neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back, elbows, fists/hands/fingers, hip/this, knees and ankles/feet. The volunteer should report the frequency in which pain was present in the last 12 months: no, rarely, frequently or always. The intensity of pain was measured by visual-analogue scales. The DG and NDG groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney test (p<0.05).Results:The women of the DG reported significantly greater frequency of submandibular area (p=0.008), laryngeal pain (p<0.001), front of the neck (p=0.015), back of the neck (p=0.001), shoulder pain (p=0.027), upper back (p=0.027) and also reported significant greater intensity of pain in the larynx/pharynx (p=0.022) and back of the neck (p=0.003).Conclusion:The frequency and intensity of musculoskeletal pain was more frequent and more intense in dysphonic women than in women without vocal complaints, showing that pain may be related to functional and organofunctional dysphonia in women.
